How did you get MCE 2005 to keep from screwing up your artwork? I had to
set my MCE 2005 default gateway to an invalid IP address to keep it off the
Internet in order to keep it from screwing with my album art.

Having
a) found the ONLY way to share music losslessly between iTunes, iPod, WMP,
and MCE 2005 [I was literally the first person in the World to achieve
this], and
b) beaten WMP10 in to submission so that artwork shows not only in WMP10
but
also MCE 2005 for all tracks (and of course iTunes), and
c) been able to substitute my own much, MUCH higher quality 600x600
artwork
(from the iTunes store) without WMP10 screwing it up and replacing it with
its own pathetic 200x200 'large' artwork
I am loath to let Microsoft do anything to break it.
My [music] setup also works with Roku Soundbridge, SlimDevices Squeezebox,
Sonos Zone Player, and even in theory an Xbox 360 Media Extender (don't
have
one - yet), all lossless!
It won't work with a Zune however (do you see me crying - not).

I'm one of those PC iTunes users and have looked at WMP 11 a bit, but
I'm scared to use it. When I tried it in the past it seemed to start
doing stuff automatically (in Windows fashion) and I wasn't sure if it
was just linking stuff into the library or adding, moving, modifying
files. I'm sure it's at least in part a bit of unfamiliarity with how
WMP works. After reading online, I'm even more confused and really
don't want to screw up my music folders. Hopefully someone can give me
some thoughts...
1. Any really good reviews of WMP11? I've found a handful, but so
many are superficial. I want to know how WMP handles and organizes the
music folder. I've read some reviews about it overwriting tags and
being overdominating to the point where people are making music folder
read-only to prevent this. Thoughts?
2. Right now I use iTunes to manage my music (~20 GB) music collection
on my laptop (i.e., iTunes organizes and controls the music directory).
I'm happy with my iTunes naming conventions and don't want it screwed
with. WMP Library settings has a check box that says "Rearrange music
in rip music folder, using rip music settings" - but Rip Music doesn't
say anything about the folder structure it uses. If all my music is
Artist-Album, will WMP do anything?
3. Can WMP be configured to import music to the rip folder but not
alter any music already in the rip folder? For that matter, how do you
do an import (add folder in iTunes lingo). I follow the monitored
folders, but if you drop music into a monitored folder, or say attach a
USB drive that has music on it, how do you get WMP to import that music
to your hard drive (i.e., add folder). In iTunes I can tell it to
leave my music alone, but still add music.
4. What has me interested in WMP is it seems flexible for adding and
removing directories. Some of the time I want to add my external hard
drive to my laptop which has 100+GB or music. But then I want to
remove the hard drive and not have the music shown in the library
(since it isn't available). WMP11 seems more ideal for doing this than
iTunes (I typically don't let iTunes ever touch my external hard drive
as I leave the "keep copy to music folder" & "keep folder organized"
options checked). I read a while ago about having multiple iTunes
libraries, but this seemed difficult as well.
Anyway, thanks for the thoughts!
I currently share my entire Music library between iTunes 7 and WMP10 and
all
my music is in Apple Lossless format (yes you are reading that right). I
did
briefly try a beta of WMP11 before I imported the bulk of my library.
From all the reports on WMP11 I have seen either you must agree to give
your
soul for all eternity to Microsoft (its in the EULA :-! ) or you should
avoid WMP11 like the pestilence it is.
I have iTunes copy files [i.e. rip CDs] and manage them and WMP10 to
just
link to them. Unlike with WMP11, it is possible to set WMP10 to NOT
screwup
your tags and artwork.
... And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him
was
Windows Vista, and WMP11 followed with him. And power was given unto
them
over 95% of computers, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with
death, and with the beasts of Redmond ...
