Re: Upgrading to WMP11 has stopped streamed video playing.

Since WMP9, mms protocol has implemented a rollover to rtsp or http
protocol, depending on firewall and remote source server support.

Since WMP11, mms protocol was completely removed from the player.

mms is a depracated, proprietary stream type which I'm not clear is
enabled by deafult on windows server 2003. It's definitely the default
on windows media services 4.1 (windows server 2000), but the other
protocols should be available to be used but may be disabled by the
server admin in error.

That explains why you can get these results (and I can confirm, this
URL also works on WMP7 and VideoLAN player).

They seem to be specifically turned off on that server URL - a request
to the equivalent http address gets no response, and rtsp requests to
the URL return describeURL failed (connect() failed: Unknown error)

[DESCRIBE is an rtsp verb to get stream details, somewhat equivalent
to HEAD in http protocol]

Unfortunately it doesn't help much because you're probably not in a
position yourself to get that server to support rtsp or http
transports.

Possibly that may not be available depending on the server setup, so
you'd need to request the university to tell you the address of a
streaming media proxy server which can connect to the mms address, but
deliver http or rtsp protocol data to you in WMP11.

I have tried all the suggestions at:

The _exact_ link is
mms://wirksworth.nottingham.ac.uk/060719pm_lan/060719pm_lan.asf

Network settings in WMP: All available protocols allowed; Proxy Settings for
http and rtsp are set to use browser settings.

This occurs with all links on this web page and did not occur with WMP10

The link plays fine in mplayer2.exe

WMP is 11.0.5721.5145 running Win XP Pro SP2

XP Firewall is on
