iTunes uses CDDB which used to be much better than Microsoft's AMG based database for one reason: it counted on user input. You could make an update and see it fixed on their site within 24 hours.
Suddenly, they did the same thing that Microsoft's online database seems to have always done: they permitted the labels to input their own data. Now, with the label itself putting in data, it is actually less correct. And they break searches by including special characters such as bullets in their text that are intended to focus your attention to their information over other information. Why market to you when you already own the music - even if you really did steal every thing in your library.
I am adding FreeDB to my media player app. Being user updated, even when there are errors, they will get fixed quickly. What tests I have done up to now, it has been absolutely accurate.

I have a few dozen old blog posts on the subject here (http://msmvps.com/blogs/thinice/Default.aspx). While I've had erratic correspondence with members of the Windowsmedia team over the last decade, none has really shown any interest in addressing the problems outlined there (and more frequently on these newsgroups). I would not count on this improving in the near term until the Windowsmedia vs Zune matter shakes out.
I also steer clear of iTunes as it is also keen to make unannounced tag changes in the background.
"Dale" <nospam@xxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:eNpoZlbEHHA.3836@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxI have searched for appropriate albums when WMP finds the wrong one, selected the correct album from the matches, and when I start WMP the next time, the incorrect information is back again. I have also searched for album information when WMP gives the wrong information, selected to manually enter the information because WMP didn't find any correct match, and still come back later and WMP has replaced my work with its erroneous information.
WMP replacing our correct information with erroneous information is the primary reason we use iTunes for importing our CDs. I never use any commercially available player for listening - sort of. I wrote my own app that calls WMP using the Windows Media API for listening. Other than on my development and test machines, I never let the WMP UI touch my music files.
And good luck on getting any official response, or even an unofficial response from a Microsoft employee about the online database.

On the whole very cleaver and saves a lot of typing in but......
The wrong info is a problem.
I have discovered on som occasions that the wrong info can be corrected by
selecting "find album info"(FAI) and search for the correct info, if its in
the database just click finish to update.
However, I have various albums where it will find the correct info for disk
1 of 2 but when i search FAI it doesent even list the info its hasd already
provided ????
What has ben provided listed under data provider is "user feedback" great
its right!, but where is disk 2 of 2 or even disk 1 as it doesnt show on the
search
Is this monitored by microsoft emplyees? are any of these issues answed in
an offical capacity?
album example "kiss hitlist summer 2002"
Regards
Blackadder.
