Hello Mike! First of all, many thanks to you for your time and effort
in helping me.

And secondly all the files that I download are .mp3. Well they are
running fine at my friends place who took a copy of a few files from me
yesteday. He uses Winamp for playing audio files like MP3 and WAV and
has never touched the Windows Media Library. So damaged headers is out
of question I think.

Also I thing I noticed common in all the files that were locked away
was that either they have really long and big file names or they have
names of websites which host the link to these files on the internet as
part of their file names. This is the reason why I said that may be
this is some sort of an anti-piracy gimmick Windows is playing with me
because it only happens after I try adding them to my Windows Media
Library. And this being the second time for a different set of files.

OK I think I know what's going on. You are downloading files which have
these websites in their file metadata as the Artist or Album name. WMP is
renaming the files based on this embedded metadata, and possibly also
creating problematic file names as a side-effect of these embedded web
addresses.

I think you need to clean up the track metadata first to eliminate those web
links. WMP will follow behind eventually to rename the tracks (unless the
tracks now have illegal or too-long file names). If the tracks have file
names longer than are legally allowed, you may be in a situation where you
have to reformat(!).

Locked:- Well I cannot delete, open(in WMP and Winamp), run, play,
rename, etc. I just can't do anything with the file. And as I mentioned
earlier, it only runs in one player now which is VLC.

Does VLC allow you to rename or delete these tracks?

Thank you once again Mike. I tried using a LAN software and asked my
friend to download the files not working on my pc. And as I guessed,
they were working absolutely fine in his Winamp. Secondly he didn't
even have to change the file name. So as per your advice, I changed the
file names and but still no luck. What I'm doing now is asking my
friend to download all the locked data so that I could redownload
everything from him in a hope to make it run once again on my pc. Will
let you know if it works that way in the Media Player then. Well thanks
for everything..

.
