Anyone know how to get bit perfect output in WMP 11 (i.e. have a sound card
output CDs at 44.1KHz and DD/DTS at 48)? Is there a plugin for WMP to allow
for this?
Well, I don't think you need a plugin : The options I'm aware of are
(1) Playback of standard audio CD from the disk : 44.1khz, 16bit using
Digital playback option in the WMP menu
Tools -> Options -> Devices -> [CD/DVD] -> Properties
Playback of HDCDs : As above but 24-bit output (requires 24 bit sound
card). The options for that are under the sound card Device, in the
same menu above - tick the checkbox if you know your sound card is
capable of this, and the disk you're playing is HDCD.
Recording and Playback of lossless windows media audio files :
As per standard CD, or better, depending on source content.
Lossless just converts the file to a smaller file which can be
completely reconstructed bit for bit compared to the original source
(approx. 40-60% compression depending on type).
Various options are available for encoding WMA lossless, from 44 -
96khz, and 16/24 bit, stereo or 5.1 audio, all as WMA9.2.
You may need to use windows media encoder or windows media studio
encoder to get the full selection of codec choices for lossless, which
are all VBR (variable bitrate)
WM Encoder 9 series and Studio Encoder are available free on this page
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/default.mspx
Another option is FLAC (open source, portable) which WMP can play
using a directshow plugin. You can read more about FLAC here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FLAC
http://flac.sourceforge.net/links.html
The tag support plugin might also be useful if you encode to FLAC
formats using the encoding plugin at http://www.illiminable.com/ogg/
FLAC can be played back on a variety of devices and digital media
receivers, for example Roku Soundbridge and Sonos devices support
playback of FLAC encoded media files.
