You can do this from the Start menu :
Go to Start, choose Run. In the box type
dxdiag.exe
Press the enter key. The DirectX diagnostics screen should appear -
just step through with "Run all tests" and see what it reports.
Post back here anything that's listed as failed / not working

I FIXED THE "NO SOUND BUT APPEARS ITS THERE", ISSUE ON WINDOWS XP.
HERE IS HOW I DID IT:
Go to help & support>index>type:Direct X>troubleshoot DirectX.
Open "DirectX" diagnostic tool.
Music tab>test directmusic (check all installed devices).listen for what is
not making sounds during the test.
Open sound & audio devices properties(your sound), click the audio tab, make
sure all devices are installed, and make sure in the "MIDI" music playback is
your default device, check "use only default devices" box is checked. click
"apply", then "ok".
You should now have sound in "WMP10".
keep in mind that this procedure is used for "WindowsXP". HOPE THIS HELPS
YOU.
P.S. if you have no devices installed because wmp10 uninstalled them,
reinstall them before you try anything else, and start from the beginning of
this post.
