Re: WMP10 and WMP11 do not play .asx files that work fine in WMP9, error message C00D1197

As you noticed and as WMP correctly pointed out, that isn't a valid URL -
check their web site. I'm not sure where you got that URL from, but it
doesn't resolve on the KALW web server, which cannot be a Microsoft problem.
Perhaps their Apache server got misconfigured, or ... the file just moved
because that's what files do. =)

Anyways,
http://www.kalw.org/media/Streaming%20Links/kalw_wmestream.asx
works fine for me on the two WMP11 XP systems I tried this on.

I rather like Microsoft. There's a lot of very intelligent people working
on really challenging problems. It's an interesting place to work. *shrug*

Windows Media Player 10 and today's download of WMP11 Beta2 (version
11.0.5705.00195) fail to play .asx files from my favorite radio station
that work fine in WMP9. Computer is Gateway 400VTX running currently
updated WinXP-home-SP2. Another computer plays these .asx files fine
with WMP9, just as mine did when it had WMP9.

The link that won't play is
http://www.kalw.org/kalw_wmestream.asx

The content of the .asx file kalw_wmestream.asx is
<ASX Version="3.0">
<entry>
<ref
href="mms://a475.l1645432695.c16454.n.lm.akamaistream.net/D/475/16454/v0001/reflector:32695"/>
<ref
href="mms://a907.l1645432696.c16454.n.lm.akamaistream.net/D/907/16454/v0001/reflector:32696"/>
</entry>
</ASX>

If I just type in the URL of the redirected site at Open URL, WMP11 and
WMP10 play it fine.
mms://a475.l1645432695.c16454.n.lm.akamaistream.net/D/475/16454/v0001/reflector:32695

I have tried all the proxy settings possible in the Option>>Network
control on WMP.

The error message is error message C00D1197
Windows Media Player cannot find the file. If you are trying to play,
burn, or sync an item that is in your library, the item might point to
a file that has been moved, renamed, or deleted.

I have tried everything noted on the help web page,
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/webhelp/default.aspx?&mpver=11.0.5705.5043&id=C00D1197&contextid=90&originalid=C00D001A
and nothing seems to work.

I can't believe that the unintended automatic update of WMP9 to WMP10
has caused my computer to be made useless for listening to the radio on
the internet. What a terrible company Microsoft is!

Please reply by email to stryker@xxxxxxxxxxxx , and I will post a
digest of the useful solutions received.
