Re: media player gone after SP2 Update

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Here is what happens.

I can play windows media files online, but then when I save it to my
harddrive to play offline, that's when I get the install prompts. What I
don't understand is why I can play the file online but not offline.

Why do I have to go through the install prompts if Media Player was
installed with SP1 and is still listed in the program list after the SP2
update? This install prompt is displayed with every windows media file I
attempt to play offline.

You should just need to finish that once. Does it happen every time?
What happens after you complete it - does it loop again, or does WMP run?

I've been using XP SP1 for a long time, but just recently upgraded to SP2
in order to use the framework 2.0 for an application I have installed on
my computer. Prior to upgrading to SP2, I had media player 10 installed
on my computer and it worked fine.

Now that I have upgraded to SP2, whenever I click on a windows media
file, I get the setup program as though this is the first time ever using
media player. The program itself is still installed on the computer and
the icons are still associated to windows media player. If the media
player was there before the SP2 update, why do I have to go through the
setup options again? I even get the setup when starting the application
through the start menu. What is going on?
