Re: Dual Monitor Screen Saver Suggestion/request

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

I'm good to go for Vista :) Been keeping an eye on it for a long time, plus I
game so my system is respectable :)

I'll check out the Vista boards and I might cave and get the beta.... I had
hoped to not play with it till release just for the full effect rather than
experiencing it piecemeal.

In regards to suggestions and bug reports, is there a formal place to do
this? I would think that since this (wmp11) is beta software they would have
a feature suggestion or bug report menu under like about or something. But i
haven't noticed any easy way to do either in the Microsoft beta's I've played
with.

I watch movies and cartoons on my pc before bed so it's very common for me
to leave it on and goto sleep. So screen saver use with wmp is kinda
important to me. For example if you have a video full screened it won't kick
the screen saver on during playback (good) or even after it finishes (bad).
Now I just selected the allow screen saver during playback option, but I have
a feeling that's just going to allow the screen saver to kick on during
playback rather than after.

What I'd like is for the screen saver to not go on when video is full screen
(of course it would be nice if it did on the 2nd monitor, but as we've
established that's a seperate issue). When playback finishes it should kick
into a mode that allowes the screen saver to come on under it's normal rules.
I'll find out after testing with the screen saver option clicked today if it
works as desired.

I forgot to mention, you'd probably also have to set your monitor to
switch off when there's no input (i.e. when the blank screensaver is
switched in)

The Vista stuff has a bunch of newsgroups you could bug about this :
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/community/default.mspx

And an upgrade advisor page to tell you how unlikely you'll be that
your current PC will run with it (hint : highly ;-)

Thank you for your reply. I'm all about getting Vista soon as it comes out :)

It would make sense for it to be something in windows, I just figured that
it would be more common while watching movies and such. The other situation
where it would be very handy is while playing video games.

Thanks for the input, and I'll check out that other site.

Is there a place to formally make suggestions for Vista?

First I'll start off by saying I haven't searched too hard for a way to do
this, so if it exists please fill me in.

I have 2 monitors plus my tv hooked up to my computer. When I setup wmp on
the TV my lcd just stays on the whole time.

Windows media player, or hell windows itself, should have a way to recognize

It's a windows feature, rather than a WMP feature. Your display driver
software (eg some iterations of NVidia or ATI software) may also have
this feature.

What you're looking for is a way to set a screen saver on
(potentially) both monitors, the LCD one to blank and hence power
down, and the TV one with a Null screen saver (always on).

The screen saver is a windows desktop setting, and unrelated to WMP.

WMP allows you to do "Allow screen saver during playback", under the
Tools -> Options menu. You'd then need to congifure the differential
screen savers using a 3rd party tool (windows doesn't have such a
tool). One example which can span monitors or double up screen savers
is at http://www.digitaltigers.com/zenview-manager.shtml

Other than that, I expect Vista might eventually ship with a utility
capable of doing this sort of multi-monitor goodness. Some Linux
window managers also have this capability. You're not going to get it
in XP though, it's too old for all this.

that the computer isn't being used on both screens during movie playback and
blank the unused ones to save power and save them from burn in.

Practically, there's no such concept of "burn in" for LCD screens, so
I wouldn't worry about it. They either work, or the cold cathode lamp
burns out (I haven't seen that happen yet mind, on my 3-4 yo monitor)
