Re: WMP #9 won't work after I've moved

Neil,
I think there is one or more viruses in my computer and that's why there are
so many problems. I think something is majorly wrong here and nothing I try
is helping anything. These THREE problems started only after I moved
recently:
1. lack of sound/media player not working
2. Microsoft Internet Explorer window saying Error Message most times as I'm
logging off the computer, closing programs("encountered error and needs to
close", "created 'error report'", and then asks me to 'send report' or not)
3. "Security Warning" window popping up in between websites that asks if I
want to download/install Adobe Flash Player 9, but it has never gone away no
matter how many times I click 'no'.
I hadn't mentioned the second one to you yet, but that MS error message just
started after I moved also. These three problems just started after moving
here. This is really frustrating. I have tried several times clicking "yes"
when I'm asked to install the Adobe Player but it never does anything.
Whether I click yes or no, it doesn't matter how many times I do it, nothing
comes of it and it still pops up!
I have tried doing several virus "scans" that are free.....on Microsoft
website, Semantec website, etc. They never work for me.....they fail to
scan. I tried downloading the free Semantec virus scan and it failed, said
"active x controls failed to load" after I waited forever on it. I tried
several times to download the Spybot Search and Destroy free software and it
downloaded but failed to install.......always says "error creating registry
key", "regcreatekeyex failed code 1009", "the configuration registry database
is corrupt".
Every time I have tried installing something onto this computer since moving
here, it never works. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling media player 9
and there has been no difference. It is definitely installed but it only
works one day every once in a while when the sound icon decides to show up.
I have tried reinstalling internet explorer 6 service pack(the version I have
had for a while) to make sure I have all the components of that pack, and it
never finished installing......says incomplete installation and asks me to
retry. I tried several times to install the Windows Defender program(both
versions actually), and they always fail, says something like you need a
better installation package to install this. Recommends I download explorer
6 service pack and I have that and have tried that. Doesn't make a
difference. Tried downloading that other windows spyware called OneCare or
something, and that has failed to install also.
I have tried all these things that it recommends and also when I click on
the Microsoft Error Report explanation message (#2 up there), it always says
the error is unknown at this time but lists a bunch of
recommendations/suggestions to try to get rid of the error message. Nothing
has worked that I have tried. Choosing to "send" the error report never
helps me out any either.
So I think my sound problem is related to this MS error message problem and
related to this Adobe security warning problem. Sounds like it to me since
they all basically started at the same time. You think viruses too? I
haven't had a spyware or virus protection program on my computer for about a
year. A year ago I had Roadrunner high speed and it came automatically with
McAffee virus software. Haven't downloaded anything since I got rid of
Roadrunner. And now it seems that this computer won't allow me to install
any protection!!
Is there any way of saving my computer? I can't afford a new one. And I
really can't afford to pay someone to come over and fix it if fixable. I
literally have no money. Memory shouldn't be the problem with my computer
here(having enough to install programs) because my RAM has a 319MB capacity
and my "resources are 61% free". Any suggestions now, Neil??
Thanks

Thanks for your posts, Neil. I haven't opened up the back of my modem but it
The sound card makes sound. The modem connects to the internet via a
phone line (though it may have a speaker to indicate it's connecting).
They are actually distinct devices. Your sound card will have 3 audio
sockets on the back, about 3.5mm, which may be colour coded
pink/green/blue on a modern machine.
The green socket is for speaker output, the pink one for microphone /
headset input (low level) and the blue one for line input level (eg CD
player or VHS audio input).
Your speakers are connected to green, right ?
sound card......everything seems fine there. I found the sound card name and
all drivers are running properly, updated, and there are no exclamation
points anywhere.
OK so far.
This situation is really weird because two days I was able to use my media
player/hear music. All the rest I wasn't. Meaning for two days the
Well ZachD's site is your next stop. He works for MS and has a lot of
troubleshooting info on there. I'd look first over the issues on this
section of the site : http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#dsound
Initially, going to the WMP menu Tools -> Options -> Devices
Select the speakers then click Properties.
The "audio device to use" should be selected as the sound card you now
know the name of (from control panel). Or as 'default directsound
device'.
get this "Security Warning" window popping up in between websites that I
visit each day. It asks me if I would like to download "Adobe Flash Player
9". And no matter how many times I click "no" it keeps popping up day after
If we assume you *don't* have flash player installed, it's a perfectly
reasonable thing to have on the system, because it's used to display
groovy effects in many many websites. It's probably not a security
warning, so you can try downloading the flash player 9 here :
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash
If it doesn't stop after installing that, I'd suspect some sort of
virus pretending to be a flash player download link (run the MS
defender *and* Symatec antivirus online scan to be sure)
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/home_homeoffice/index_virus.html
day. Why won't it stop? It can't make me download something if I don't want
to can it? That's a media device right, so nobody NEEDS that do they? I
don't want to use up precious memory on things that I don't really need.
Really it's only loaded when you visit a web page that uses it (which
about 30% do), and it takes very little memory compared to most
programs. Nothing to be concerned about.
HTH
Cheers - Neil
