To Neil Smith:
Thanks for your reply. The 'version number'? of WMP 10 on my laptop is
10.00.00.4036.
I used the link you provided that goes to
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#classnotreg - thanks.
Unfortunately after reading what it said on the page I ended up at -
specifically when clicking on the link on the left to get to all the 'WMP 10
Questions' and clicking on the first link provided on that page, which goes
to http://home.arcor.de......, etc -
I am afraid I am none the wiser, as somewhere on the page that the above
link takes me to, it mentions clicking on web help - which I have done
several times - and it it also says doing this will result in you getting
information about what codecs are missing. Every time I have clicked on web
help all I get to see is a long message with an 'error message number'? that
is something like C000D108B9 or something similar.
Every page I have gone to including Wmplugins.com does not seem to me to
have the kind of information that I can't understand because I have found no
mention of these error message numbers in relation to my wmp 10 problems, and
also when I have read the information provided it either talks about symptoms
that I am not experiencing or using a frame of reference that I cannot get my
head round so I can't get any further.
Thanks anyway, but I will try to find those audio/video files I tried
unsuccessfully to play in WMP 10 before, again and download them so that when
I try to play them again I can get the exact error message number in order to
do a google search with it. Perhaps that might help.
Regards,
Tufftybob

These are the first steps you need to identify the codec for playback.

It's worth posting back with the version number of your player though
once you have a question about where to get the codec. You can find
the media player version from the menu File -> About windows media

I keep getting error messages when trying to play some .mpg or .mpeg video------------------------------------------------
files downloaded from the net. Most .avi video files will not play at all,
even when there is no 'missing codec' message. The message says that 'some
codecs cannot be found or are missing'. When I click on the 'web help' link,
I only get to a page that gives an error message number which is something
like C000D108B9 or something similar. I don't really understand the rest of
the message. I have already gone to Wmplugiins.com but there are no
references to error message numbers that might explain which codecs are the
ones that are 'missing'. If I put this error message number into google - the
next time a downloaded video won't play - should I get an answer telling me
which 'codec' is missing? All the mpg/mpeg video files that I have downloaded
have been given a windows media player logo so they should all play, but they
don't.
Also despite having the latest 'free' versions of real player (for .rm, etc
files) and quick time player (for .mov, etc files) these will also not play
properly so I don't even bother downloading these. I have tried downloading
the latest 'Divx' codecs, but these are fully up to date, but still some
.avi, etc video files won't play
Any help much appreciated
