That particular error should mean that the your system catalog store at some
point invalidated a catalog improperly and hasn't been able to update it
since. You may be able fix it via updating to the WMP11 beta, but I do not
believe that the WMP10 installer would be able to bypass the system problems
you are running into here. If you are further stymied here, you probably
would want to talk to actual product support. What should be happening is
that the protected file catalog storage routines are apparently succeeding
(giving proper results to my code) but failing to append to the catalog
store. That's perhaps a little technical, but that's the guts of it. There
is pretty much no possible way that you would be able to detect this or
notice this on your own, which is probably why you haven't noticed it and
likely won't be able to notice it. The only reason I know much about it is
because at one point we actually got a machine in this state to look at. If
you did a signature verification check on the DRM files, they would show up
as validated against the DRM catalog, but *not* against the system catalog
store, and *that* is the crux of this issue to the best of my knowledge.
So: not directly helpful, but -- that's a lot of good data to have and
probably points you over to actual technical support if you're still
flummoxed. =\

System integrity is fine so far as I or my machine can tell.
aside from the fact that Windows insists on trying to download SP2 (which
i
dont currently have to room for), and of course this problem with WMP, the
machine is running fine. WMP ran fine until the other day. no new
software
was installed, no changes made to the system as a whole. I dont even use
WMP
much anymore, just for websites that require it, and backing up my media
to
CDR once in a while. I've restored back as far as my machine is able to,
and
it still has the same problem. i'm hoping that i can fix this without
having
to start from scratch with a new XP install. I don't have restore discs
for
this system anymore (they were stolen 2 years ago) and I have no other way
to
reinstall. my machine's manufacturer has yet to EVER reply to any of my
requests for new restore discs, both online and offline, in the last 2
years.

This is a small message dialog, correct, and not the big setup dialog?
That's an internal player failure that should typically mean you have had
catalog installation failure. I believe you would want to run "sfc
/scannow" or some such other system integrity checker...

I don't know why this happened, but out of the blue my WMP10 won't start
up.
It says it needs to be reinstalled, either online or from disc. I've
tried
reinstalling it both ways, and as soon as it's done Setup, it pops up
the
same error message (Media Player is not properly installed. Do you wish
to
reinstall from the website?).
I've tried rolling it back to WMP9, but it says 'Rollback Failed'.
I have XP Home SP1 atm.
