Thanks alot Neil for your reply. Yeah although I have got it fixed but
I have to put the reason in my faq document. Actually before installing
WinDVD 6, media player is able to play on the primary screen, but not
on the extended screen. It is after installing WinDVD 6 that media
player is able to play on the extended screen as well.

If that's the case, I would have checked your WMP settings before and
after WinDVD was installed. If you you go to the menu in WMP, and look
at Tools -> Options -> Performance -> Advanced, currently you may have
"Use Overlays" set

That can actually be set for the main display and only that on some
video chips - more modern video chips can support overlays on any
random monitor output. So it's possible that WinDVD reconfigured WMP
to *not* use overlays, and that "cured" the secondary monitor problem.

It's easy to test of course by setting that, playing a DVD then
unsetting it and repeating the playback on the secondary monitor.

You should know that disabling overlays can have a performance effect
(downwards) because you render all the video output on the CPU, rather
than letting the graphics card handle the video rendering in the
'overlay' buffer.

I tried backing up the WinDVD 5 files before installing WinDVD6 and
restoring them after WinDVD6 installation, and even then media player
was able to play on the extended screen. I comapred the registry before
and after WinDVD6 installation and there are bunch of wiered keys that
WinDVD 6 is inserting like a key for "Intervideo MPEG4 video decocder"
with Filter data in binary..... Could it be that winDVD6 installation
is doing something in the registry that is making the media player play
on the extended. or is it simply a new MPEG4 decoder that is making the
differnce.

Thanks

Hi,

I have an notebook with an integrated VGA. the laptop has a WinDVD
version 5 installed. when i play mpg files on media player and take it
on the extended display the media player shows a black screen. if i
play mpg file on winDVD 5 and take it on the extended display it playes
fine.

Now if i install WinDVD version 6, media player also starts working
fine. that is i play the same mpg file on media player and take it on
the extended display and everything is fine.

But i want to understand what exactly is going on. I know that on
installation WinDVD 6 is setting somethings in the registry due to
which media player starts working fine. I would like to understand
exactly what WinDVD 6 installation might be doing which is making the
media player to work and why media player doesn't work before WinDVD6
installation. I read somewhere that media player does not come with an
mpg decoder, does that has anything to do with this. Any help or
suggestions would be highly appreciated.

All that's happening is WinDVD6 is installing an MPEG decoder which
media player can use for playback. It's unrelated to the extended
screen (second monitor ?) and entirely related to licensing of MPEG
decoders :

They cost money for the license, WMP is a free product therefore it
can't come with a MPEG decoder, which is used for DVD playback.

Installing a product which *comes* with a WMP compatible MPEG decoder
makes the issue go away.

Glad you got it fixed.
