Where did you actually run across an M2V file? Those aren't very popular
files. You can pretty much copy the data from:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Multimedia\WMPlayer\Extensions\.mp2v
to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Multimedia\WMPlayer\Extensions\.m2v
and get this to work, I'd think.
But yes, the player doesn't play arbitrary file extensions without
prompting - that's just asking for trouble and isn't supported. I'm not of
the full extent of yourr question. Generally WMP doesn't support the "full"
list of two hundred extensions people have made up for MPEG files simply
because a lot *were* simply made up and aren't actually used. I believe in
particular .m2v was one that was in collision with another file format for
years, so wasn't "safe" for WMP to try to play back anyways.
I'm actually looking at quietly maybe adding "playback support" for .m2v,
but it's such a rare type that's you and everybody else in the entire world
is better off if you rename it to a more common file extension.
In theory if I'd been thinking about it years ago I and others should have
stepped in and gotten the MPEG file extension space sorted out and
hard-coded, but alas it's devolved into the murk you see know where who
knows what any given MPEG file extension represents. =(
Thanks for the feedback,
-Zach

I want to play a .m2v file on the Windows Media Player 10.0. This .m2v file
has needs MPEG-2 decoder. This is also installed on my computer. Then
appears
this: "The selected file has an extension that is not recognized by
Windows
Media Player, but the Player may still be able to play it. Becuase the
extension is unknown by the Player, you should be sure that the file comes
from a trustworthy source. Do you want the Player to try to play the
file?"
Where the hell I can say to this facking player, that it has to play .m2v
files without asking?
I know, there is a possiblility to mark "Don't ask me again for this
extension" But I want to put some extensions in a list.
How do I do this?
