Re: Bad sound for MCE2005 and Media Player

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Just to finish up from my end... I removed the K-Lite pack with no
improvement to WMP10 DVD sound. So, for the few times I might watch a DVD,
I'll use Nero or WinDVD.
The machine works as a computer, its original intention. The MCE was
included, but not a requirement. I haven't used the TV function yet, but
judging by the volume of problems posted, I may not bother.

Thanks,
Mark

I don't expect a reinstall of WMP10 would do anything for this, really -
K-Lite is generally considered noxious. As soon as I personally hear that a
codec pack was installed to the system, I have to walk away - those things
are incredibly nasty, install random software, and write over random system
settings. Codecs packs are some of the worst software I've ever seen,
sorry. =\

may help you further, but I'd recommend the first thing you do is pull off
K-Lite as much as you can and if you need specific codecs get them from a
reputable vendor. Codec packs are evil. =(

Hi,
Thanks for your interest and help with this.

Audio CDs play OK.
The machine came with InterVideo WinDVD and I put Nero on, with a number
of
codecs to evaluate, for compressed audio CDs.

The K-lite codec pack is also installed (for divx support I think).

GSpot and Sherlock give a lengthy list (over 50 lines) of installed video
and audio codecs, many of them Mirosoft.

Does the "strange set of decoders" comment indicate that you expect to see
a
different list.
Could the installation of the other codecs caused some corruption as
although the Microsoft codecs are on the machine, there are not being
used?

I can't tell if, as originally delivered, the WMP10 DVD sound was Ok
because
I have only now got around (12 months later) to trying it and there have
been
a number of installations made.

Do you expect a re-install of WMP10 (which I haven't done yet) would help
clean up things?
Thanks,
Mark

Well, if audio CDs are affected, that wouldn't be the MPEG2 decoders.
But
that's a strange set of decoders - did you install some codec pack
previous
to this occuring... ? Are Audio CDs affected... ?

Hi,
Machine has available Microsoft updates to date.
Running the Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility:

Nero Mpeg Video Decoder NeMPG.ax 1.0.0.25
InterVideo Video Decoder IVIVIDEO.ax 5.0.11.677 - This is both MCE and
MP10
compatible and selected as preferred.
Nero Video Decoder NeVideo.ax 2.02.61 - There are 2 entries for this,
one
is
marked as MCE compatible, the other is not.
GPL MPEG-1/2 Decoder GplMpgDec.ax 0.1.2.0

Running Gspot gives a long list of both Video and Audio codecs, which i
can
post if required.

Is there a "default" set of codecs that must be resident to satisfy
WMP10?
Although the machine is 12 months old, I have only just started to play
with
MC application.

I tried the hardware accelleration set to none as recommended.

Thanks,
Mark

This is just happening from shiny discs, as it were... ? What changed
on
the system prior to this occuring...?

WMP generally uses digital playback for Audio CDs, but DVDs should be
played
back the same in all applications, assuming they're using the same
decoder... what MPEG2 decoders have been installed to the system?

Hi
I know this sounds like a Media Center 2005 topic but I thought I
might
try
here because it sounds like the problem is media player which media
center
uses.
I have a media center PC 2005 with all the latest needed updates
currently
applied. No major ones have been applied recently but in the last
week
I
have
noticed that all of a sudden the sound has started to play up. It's
doing
like a bubbly effect on the sound. It only happens when playing
dvd's
or
music cd's in media center or media player.
If I play a dvd using any other 3rd party dvd player software it
works
fine,
the same with music.
Watching tv or listening to music on the hard drive through media
center
the
sound is fine. Although when I tried copying a cd to the hard drive
using
the
option in media center it actually made the bubble effect worse when
playing
back from the hard drive (music already on the hard drive is fine).

Any help you can provide would be great

Matt
