Do I need to download a particular codec? The help file provides no answers
to how to correct the problem.

Unfortunately it's not a "problem". MIDI files are just data files,
instructions to tell your software synthesiser on the sound card to
play certain notes and instruments. There's no actual audio in them
like there is on a CD. So, there's nothing to "record" to CD from
media player.

Instead, I'd get media player to play back the file, and use your
sound card's audio input to record its own output. You'd need a 3.5mm
cable for that, taken from the output to the Line-In input of the same
sound card.

Then use a program such as Audacity (free from
http://audacity.sourceforge.net) to record the audio digitally from
the sound card to a WAV file. And finally, once recorded, have WMP use
those WAV files and burn them to CD.

It sound complicated but isn't when you've done it once - and the
technique is the same for recording say, audio from a microphone for
your own radio Podcast

Some very similar steps are shown in photos here
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/howto/FromVinyltoComputer_StepByStep.aspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/mediaadvice/0081.mspx
using the "Analog Recorder" program (part of the Digital Media bonus
pack) but the steps are nearly the same - the cable goes out and back
in to the sound card, instead of from a record deck or tape deck.

Especially note in th second link the section "How can I record my
voice to a file in Windows Media Player?"
