then WMP will read the data into its database from there. Of course you
have to be wary about having multiple programs monitoring and updating
your media files as they will fight over the data. An offline backup is
*strongly* recommended.

Not sure about all that, under W2k where does WMP keep its database ?

WMP's database is purely an index file with accompanying metadata. Your
msuci files are still wherever you left them on your hard disk.

and how to I get WinAmp to get at the ID3 tags ?

Or are these in the .wma files that WMP creates ?

ID3 tags are in MP3 and WMA files. I haven't used WinAmp in a while, but
since it usually does tags better than WMP, you should be able to find
out its interaction with CDDB fairly easily.

Windows Media Player will either
* look up info in its online database and store the information locally
and then write it out to the files (if they support tags and are not
read-only)
* or read the information from the files to its database

Whether one overwrites the other is partly determined by your Options
Library settings, but lots of things can go wrong :-(. Hence the need
for a backup.

cheers for that, I'll backup and give it a go...
