Re: MPG Playback Problem

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Well, I don't know if I'll be much help with the wmp.dll rollback. I've tried
restoring my system to Feb 15, Feb 10 and Jan 27. None of the restore points
would run normally. Looking under Add/Remove Programs, I see that updates
KB911564, KB911565, KB911927 were installed on 2/16 and KB913446 was
installed on 2/18.

It does look like using add/remove, I can rollback wmp to the previous
version. Should I remove any of the KB updates first? I see there is also
something called Windows Media Format Runtime. Should that be removed too?

I talked about this further with Tedd... there's nothing we've notably
changed here. The fact that it happens with mplayer2.exe almost discredits
the idea that wmp.dll is involved, since wmp.dll isn't invoked in
mplayer2.exe.

But yeah: if someone could either find me a repro I could follow to get this
error, that would be great. Barring that: if someobody can walk up the
wmp.dll update list from 3802 and help eliminate possibilities, that would
be much appreciated.

The latest QFE does two things:
* installs the latest v10 wmp.dll
* runs unregmp2.exe
, but there's also a second WMP-related QFE in the latest patches that does
the latter, so only the former *should* be of concern.

My assertions so far based upon the information provided here:
* This doesn't happen with wmp.dll 3802 or earlier
* This happens for some unknown set of people (6 people here?) with
wmp.dll 3990
* This will not happen for that same set of people if they just run
"c:\windows\inf\unregmp2.exe /UpdateWMP"
* It only happens for files played back via DirectShow - thus affecting
both mplayer2.exe and wmplayer.exe for MPEG/AVI

Checking the process list for mplayer2.exe, the only v10 file I see it
pulling in for DShow playback (clock.avi, in this case) is wmpdxm.dll... I
don't think that would be possibly affected by this change. If nothing
further shakes out, I'll check with Tedd on that angle.

Here's what I have found so far...

1. Changing the video acceleration did not make a difference.
2. mplayer2 has the exact same problem.
3. WMV files (720X480) do NOT have this problem. They are fine.

I'll look at the home.arcor.de site and consider "walking up the wmp.dll
update chain".

Multiply posted to the relevant threads. Please excuse the bad
netiquette... getting responses to these questions is vrey highly value
to
me. =\

OK, follow-up after talking with Tedd:

Since this is affecting DShow filetypes (AVI, MPEG), this is unlikely to
be
caused by the DirectX Video Acceleration change, which was limited to
playback of WMV files. It may have been sourced back to some previously
released non-security update to wmp.dll. This site:
http://home.arcor.de/carsthom/updates/wmp10_updates.html
has an outstanding list that tracks down the updates to wmp.dll.

* I would believe that tweaking video hardware acceleration would not
affect
this?
* Does mplayer2.exe show this same problem?
* Can you confirm whether WMV files show this problem too?

That should be a good list to allow some narrowing down of what's
interesting.

Somebody REALLY helpful that has hit this issue could roll back their
system
pre-QFE. Then:

1: Verify that the system does NOT have the issue.
2: Run "c:\windows\inf\unregmp2.exe /UpdateWMP"
3: Verify that the system does NOT have the issue.
4: Walk up the wmp.dll update chain:
http://home.arcor.de/carsthom/updates/wmp10_updates.html
, and try to figure out which exact version of wmp.dll first caused this
video issue. If this is sourced from a change to wmp.dll, I would be
surprised if the latest security QFE was the source of this issue. We
appear to know (thanks to Tony) that if it is wmp.dll, it could only be a
change *after* wmp.dll version 10.0.0.3802, which limits the area of
investigation.

If somebody actually helps me peg a bug in wmp.dll here, I'll beg Michael
for some random Windows Media goodie to send along. =\

Thank you for your time here. While I'm not product support (the people
that route these issues), if I can get good data here, I'll try to keep
Tedd
updated to what I know.

-Zach

What video card do you have with what drivers?

The latest QFE included updates to use DirectX Video Acceleration - it
sounds like this exposed an issue on your system... ?

I have quite a few DVD quality MPG files that I created by transferring
video
from my digital camcorder to my pc. I have always been able to play
them
using WMP - until recently. I installed Google Earth, and NASA World
Wind
which both use DirectX or OpenGL or who knows what. Of course I also
added
several other apps, misc. updates, etc.

Now I find that WMP cannot playback these high res MPGs. The sound
usually
comes through, but the video is a complete mess. WMP will play other
low
quality MPGs, wmv, etc. though.

I have reinstalled WMP, DirectX, deleted Google Earth, etc. I looked
into
reinstalling the Windows Video codecs, but from what I've read, that
is
done
as part of the WMP install.

Nothing has helped. Unless someone can give me another suggestion, I'm
going
to try going back to a Restore Point. (I always consider this a last
resort).
Thanks.
