Re: Can't Individualize WMP 10

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Ah! You've hit the crux of the problem then. Until you can update on the
Windows Update site, WMP/DRM has to fail too because it's trying to use some
of that same technology.

I'm only a neophyte when it comes to trouble-shooting catalog/certification
signing issues... if resetting the system date and registering SoftPub
didn't help, I'd think that you'd want to turn to Windows Update support.
We use some of that technology, but I personally have never had the
opportunity to learn what they're doing under the covers here... and that's
where your system is failing. =\

I try to keep my computer fairly up to date, at least on the things
that seem to affect my computer and usage. But just to make sure I went
to the update link you provided to double check and may have run into a
related problem.

I clicked on the express button to check my computer for update status
and got an error message:

[Error number: 0x80072F8F]
Your computer's date and time appear to be out of sync with an update
certificate. To fix this:
1. In Control Panel, open Date and Time Properties.
2. Ensure that the date and time are correct.

Clicking on the link provided under that provided this info:

This error may occur if the date and time on your computer varies too
much from the valid date and time of the SSL certificates used by the
Windows Update site. This causes the scan process to fail. Please
verify that your computers date and time are accurate.

Two possible solutions were provided, checking to make sure the date
and time on my computer is correct (it is, verified with a current time
website). And the other one was to:

1. In the Run box, type regsvr32 SOFTPUB.dll.

Which I did, but to no effect for this problem. I reloaded the update
link you gave and still got the same error message. I also tried the
upgrade page for WMP individualizing just to double check and still not
working.

You mentioned my local certificate store might be out of date or out of
whack (which seems to be what the above might be indicating). How would
I go about checking that and fixing it? I'm afraid I don't know much
about certificates other than that they are a way to assure users that
info is from a trusted authority. Thanks for any further help on this,
I'm pretty darn frustrated!

That's an interesting error. Are you up to date on
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com ?

That error would seem to indicate that your local certificate store is
out
of date or somehow out of whack.

So far I've tried everything. Including following all the steps listed
at this link:

http://msmvps.com/blogs/chrisl/articles/21723.aspx

Whenever I try to go to this link
http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp to get my
computer individualized so that I can finally purchase and download
music from online, I click on the upgrade button, say yes I want to
continue, then get a small grey box that pops up. The box seems to
originate from Internet Explorer and the box says "The certificate
authority is invalid or incorrect." I'm at a loss as to how to get past
this point. Any help appreciated! (I've searched all over the web
including this group and have never seen this particular issue
mentioned.)

Rob
