Re: wmp doesn't recognise files on a maxtor shared storage device

Hello Mike - thanks for the response.

In answer to your questions - the reason I was surprised by the extra files was because they weren't visible in the old location (even with windows explorer set to view hidden files and folders). All that was in each album folder was the mp3s themselves.

The extra files are usually hidden/system files. You may have changed something so that they revealed themselves on the external drive.

Different users do use the same music store. This was fine when we were only using one PC, but now I'm trying to connect users from the laptop as well - hence the network attached storage solution.

By 'store' do you mean 'online music store' or 'local set of folders'?

WMP doesn't seem to work well over a network, and the profile-based settings mean that conflicts may create nasty side-effects in the way the common data is accessed.

BTW Make sure you have a backup for all the data on the Maxtor. They are prone to start failing very suddenly after 6-12 months in my experience. Other users (via Amazon reviews) indicate the same for their external drives.

Thanks again for your response,

I've just bought a Maxtor Shared Storage Device (300Gb) and have copied my mp3 files onto it so I can play them on both my laptop and my PC. The problem is that Windows Media Player (v10) won't recognise them and put them in the library, either when I search for them or when I monitor the folder. Out of the 3000 or so mp3 files, it finds just 33. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to the ones that it does find.

I noticed that when the files get copied onto the maxtor each album and artist has extra files with it, such as a desktop.ini file and some jpg pictures for the cover art. I don't know if this is significant or not.

The extra files are to be expected with WMP. I don't understand what you mean by "when the files get copied onto the maxtor". Where were the files before? Do all these folders correspond to tracks successfully added to WMP library?

Note (which will only make sense if used used Maxtor shared storage yourself), when I used the quick start software to set up shared storage in the first place my laptop (running xphome) wouldn't remember the password for the user account and I kept having to retype it each time I logged on before I could do anything. To get around this I've got rid of the folders and accounts set up by the automated approach and used the management web page to set up a public folder for each user and one for the music.

There's an implication that multiple users/profiles are accessing this storage. Is this the case? If the monitored folders overlap then the different profile settings for WMP can interfere with each other.
