Can't run .wmv or .avi Files

any video file I have tried just keeps freezing up my comp. I press the
..wmv file, then my computer overloads and I can't use the OS... the os
just dies....

Well I looked in my Task Manager and found that WMP10 took up 100% of
my CPU Usage.... And im running AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Barton 1.83 gHz
with 768 MB of RAM...

I don't understand it, I built this computer by meself and WMP10 worked
for the first 3 weeks... now it crashes my computer and I've stopped
running video files... And every time I re-install the OS or the WMP
thing, it works for about 20 minutes, then re-crashes me...

Help?
