Thanks for your reply and for any help you can provide.
This got long, sorry. I've tried to provide meaningful info as requested by
your (very helpful) FAQ:
crash bucket number: 65536003
Responses to the rest of the questions asked in that portion of your FAQ:
Does the file mmswitch.ax exist on your system? - NO
What operating system are you using? - Win 2000 / 5.00.2195 / SP4
What exact version of Windows Media Player are you using? - the latest
version of WMP 9 available from the MS web site (same as that referenced in
your link in the FAQ). The program doesn't run long enough for me to check
the version.
What type of issue are you having? - WMP9 program crashes immediately on
start. I suspect it's due to a problem I'm having with DRM as it didn't
start until I started messing the DRM rights (trying to get a downloaded
audio file to run). Other programs (including Internet Explorer and
RealPlayer) are also experiencing DRM problems.
Does this happen in other players? Which ones? - Other players (RealPlayer &
WinAMp) both tell me I don't have the license to play the file in question
(although I did download it because it used to play under RealPlayer) and
then later crash
Does it happen in/with both "mplayer2.exe" and "wmplayer.exe", if
applicable? - When I run mplayer2, it tells me:
"In order to play this file, you need to upgrade your media player to a
version compatible with Windows Media Rights Manager V7."
and then provides a link to the MS website to download WMP10.
Does this happen for files saved locally, files played back from the
Internet, or both? - WMP won't run long enough for me to try to play anything.
Does this happen only if the file has video, or does it happen for all
files? - all the time
What type of file are you trying to play? Is it an MPEG, ASF, AVI, MIDI,
WAV, or what? - I'm trying to play DRM-protected WMA files.
Does this happen for all files of that type, or just certain ones? -
consistently crashes.
What are the steps that you follow in order to produce the error? - start
the program
What are you doing when you get the error? - start the program
How could someone else cause the error to happen their computer? - don't know
If the problem occurs with content on the Internet, what URL do you use to
encounter the problem? - N/A
What video card do you have? - Radeon 9600 Pro
What sound card do you have? - not sure - built into motherboard
Does this same error occur on any other computer? - No, I've been able to
play these particular files on another PC with the same verison of WMP
If this is a networking problem, what is your networking configuration? - N/A
If there's an error code, what is it? What exactly does the error text say?
Most critically, what is the error code number if present?
The initial window that pops up says:
"Microsoft Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." It displays no error code
When I click the link that shows the error report data, the data at the top
includes:
Error signature
AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.2980 ModName: msvcrt.dll
ModVer: 6.1.9844.0 Offset: 00024a6d
>From "To view technical information about the error report" in same window
Exception Information
Code: 0xc0000005 Flags: 0x00000000
Record: 0x0000000000000000 Address: 0x0000000078024a6d
If you hit a crash and get the opportunity to send an error report, do so! -
Done, several times.
Then go to the Event Viewer in Administrative Tools (...snip...) "Fault
bucket" number. What is that number? - 65536003
What WMP6 version does this page detect? - none -> immediately crashes IE
What WMP7+ version does this page detect? - none -> immediately crashes IE
:-(
Data from event viewer on IE crash:
The description for Event ID ( 1000 ) in Source ( Microsoft Internet
Explorer ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary
registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote
computer. The following information is part of the event: iexplore.exe,
6.0.2800.1106, wmp.dll, 9.0.0.3250, 003b0000.
I repeated this several times and didn't get the event that contains a
bucket number for the IE crashes.
