I have a partial solution to my own problem.
There is useful information at http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#vdriver . In
particular, going into Tools>Options>advanced and unchecking overlays solved
the problem for Windows Media player.
Nevertheless, the problem still exists in some other programs. BTW,
Quicktime never had a problem with any of the MPEGs which caused a problem
in Windows Media or Real player. But some other programs still have a
problem. For example, Photoshop elements 2.0 has a function to import a
frame from video, and it shows the same weird colors.
I did run the DirectX diagnostic tool (no problem detected), and also
downloaded the most recent DirectX update.
