No sound when playing file from jump drive

I just downloaded WMP 10, and I'm trying to play MP3 files from a jump drive.
It plays the file, but with no sound (I did not try this with WMP 9). I'm not
getting any error messages or anything, it just plays the file with no sound.
It does this on my home and work computers, which are both running Win XP.
What might I be doing wrong? Thanks Paul T
