Help needed please with Windows Media Player

I just got back from vacation, and turned on my computer. I tried to play a
video, and media player didn't load up correctly and froze my computer. Then
I went to the microsoft website, and tried to download version 10 and I got
an error message that stated that version 10 technologies are not compatible
with my computer. Please help
