Totally Confused - WMP 10 Can't play MIDI or MPEG files (amongst others) !!!

I keep getting the message that the file type is not supported and I am
using basic file types such as MID and MPEG.

There are plenty of codecs on my system that support MPEG decoding.

Any idea how to get this working again would be much appreciated.

Incidentally I have just rolled back to WMP9 (I had some content with
licenses specific to WMP9) and then reinstalled WMP 10 and it has been
broken since then.

Note that it will play DVD media and MID files work fine in Real Player.
