RE: Very strange problem with playing embedded movies

OK. Here's what I have found so far on the way to a major breakthrough to
deliver embedded video's from the 80040241 error. But I'm going to need some
help here.
* Many people have this problem, but certainly not every one.
* The problem seems to exist on XP Pro/Home/SP1/SP2, but also on Windows 2000!
* This problem has been reported with different WMP versions (9 and 10).
* Installing the Media Player again always solves the problem and the
installed wmplayer.exe plays embedded video's fine for a while, but you never
know for how long or what causes it to stop working again.
* When it stops working, it is mplayer2.exe trying to play the embedded
video's (reporting version 6.4.09.1130) instead of the newly installed one.
* On a rare occasion, you may find sites which still have video's embedded
that are compatible with what mplayer2.exe can do (press play on this one:
http://www.topchretien.com/video/#). It seems that in this case the Windows
Media Player ActiveX control "msdxm.ocx" is used as add-on (for a WMV). But
even then it may refuse to play (mplayer2.exe refuses to be configured, see
options... - advanced - change). In my case it played again when I tried
after I had logged on as the system administrator... Anyway, I want WMP10 to
continue to do its job, not mplayer2.exe!
* mplayer2 fails to play most of the embedded video's however. It seems
that any embedded audio/video that call on a "Moniker Class" add-on does not
work anymore (like VIDEO__X_MS_WMV Moniker Class for a WMV)!
* Did you also notice that explorer makes a reference to add-ons by a Class
ID number, like {60204BB3-7078-4F70-8F69-68297621941C}? Is the error caused
by a change in these numbers? I don't think so, but I don't have any
knowledge on these numbers (yet).
* As far as I have seen, the reappearance of the problem can not be
assiociated with the removal or the appearance of a (system) file. My guess
is that it must be related to configuration or registry settings (browser or
system).
* As far as I have seen, it hasn't anything to do with user accounts either.
* And not with any Java as I suspected earlier either (thank you Robin).
* Maybe Chris Lanier knows more about this than he wants to tell us?
Now can anyone get closer to a major breakthrough?
One last thing. In my attempt to find out what's happening I tried to
remove mplayer2.exe from my disk (don't try this at home). If I succeed to
do that, Windows restores it a few seconds later! If you delete it 5 times,
it is 5 times in the recycle bin, but still not deleted. This to say that
Windows is powerful in restoring itself from real damage.
But!!!! Suppose that a change made by the WMP10 installation is interpreted
by the system as "damage", the WMP10 configuration may stop working properly
as soon as the system has "restored" what it thought was an error!
