Video and Movie Help Needed

I recently downloaded a movie, and when i tried to play it, an error message
came up that said I didn't have the codecs required. How do I know what I
need to play it? But then something else happened...I left it on for a while,
and it started to play..only it was just the sound, and the screen was
blank...can anyone tell me what I need to do, because I desperately want to
watch this movie!! I have the newest media player installed and my computer
is Windows XP
