Please note I have very little clue of what I am talking about (even if
I do seem to have gone in depth)... please don't talk too scarily
technical, assume I know nothing it's prolly safer :o)
Error message:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support
the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress
the file.
File types in question:
..wmv and .avi
Used to be able to play these files (pre re-formatting hard drive), now
only 2 avi and 4 wmv will play. I am pretty sure it will be that I may
well have to download codecs, but am uncertain as to which would be
necessary.
GSpot (v2.21) says that it's not a valid avi file, yet a couple out of
my collection (from this one source) work.
A working avi and Gspot:
It states the video codec is DX50/DIVX, for which I have 2 (apparently)
compatible codecs both of which are the DivX Decoder Filter. Status is
"file length correct".
Rendering a working avi through GSpot says path is:
(S) --> AVI Splitter --> DivX Decoder Filter --> (R)
with video source type (4cc): DX50
A working wmv and GSpot:
codecs n.a. but stat is "File is ASF (.WMA/.WMV)" (I assume as
unsupported file type for GSpot)
Rendering says path is:
(S) --> WMVideo Decoder DMO --> (R)
with vid src: WMV2
Using Sherlock (v2.00)I can find the 4cc: divx (twice) but it doesn't
mention DX50 separately (yet it is highlighted green in GSpot (in the
"details" status of video codecs section) with src as REG there is a
dx50 and a DX50 additional media types 07 and 08 respectively).
Can you help?
Do I need further codecs? if so what and where?
Thanks very much for your time and I hope long-winded nature of this
has been helpful rather than throwing useless info at you.
