0xC00D1199: Cannot play the file

My son got a movie file - ends with .avi - tried to play it and got this
message: 0xC00D1199: Cannot play the file

This is Windows Media Player v 9.00.00.3250

Operating System: XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2

Any suggestions?
