WMP9/Win2000 no audio mp3/avi/mpg C00D10D1

When I try to play avi files with WMP9, I get error C00D10D1 “The audio
codec identified by the format tag 1 is required to play this file”. The
video plays but not the audio. However, avi files play fine on DivX player,
it plays both audio and video. RealPlayer and QuickTime Player play video but
not audio. Windows Media Player 6.4 gives me “Unable to download an
appropriate decompressor. (Error=80040200)” and plays video without audio.
When I try to play mpg files, I get the same error – C00D10D1 “The audio
codec identified by the format tag 1 is required to play this file.” The
video plays but not the audio. These files play on QuickTime with audio, but
RealPlayer and DivX player only play video and not audio. Windows Media
Player 6.4 gives me: Unable to download an appropriate decompressor.
(Error=80040200) and plays video without audio.
When I try to play mp3 files, I get error 8007007E “The specified module
could not be found”. Mp3s play on RealPlayer, and on QuickTime. Windows Media
Player 6.4 gives me: Unable to download an appropriate decompressor.
(Error=80040200)
These errors occur with both files stored locally as well as files on the
internet.
Mplayer2.exe is Version 6.4.09.1128
