ok second attempt.
im currently using windows xp home edition, version 2002, service pack 2.
my current version of windows media player is version 10.00.00.3646.

i was trying to play music from a website when the error occured. this is
the first time this has happened, and ive never had a problem streaming sound
or video fom this website.

the noticification the appears is:

'Windows Media Player cannot connect to the server. The server name might
not be correct, the server might not be available, or your proxy settings
might not be correct.'

this happens no matter what site or what type of media i choose to stream.

when i click the 'more information' button this is the error message i get:
C00D1198: Cannot connect to the server

ive tried to correct the problem by following the troubleshooting guide but
no luck.
ive also tried re-installing the media player to see if the problem repairs
its self.

if someone can help id be very greatful
