Missing Codecs

Is there a log or some way to find out exactly which codecs you are missing?
I have an .avi file that I am trying to play and I am missing a codec but I
don't know which one. I downloaded a DiVX codec but I still have problems.
Anybody know how I can find out what codec I need?
