WMP does rewrite tags in the media-files it handles. However, the "It
writes a whole series 00H" claim seems rather dubious. I've not had any
problems writing CDs or with playback (apart from completely
unpredictable playback order on data CDs).
I agree that you should have a backup of your files before allowing WMP
to touch them.
