i just did a clean install of windows xp with integrated sp2. dx9.0c and
latest build of wmp9 are installed along with that. immediately after
installation without installing anything else i tried to play my wmv files in
wmp9. they played just fine.
then i installed wmp10. the quality of wmv playback got vastly deteriorated.
i now have some sort of combing effects all over the picture plus minor
details seem to be kind of distorted too. i later installed a few codecs and
tried to play my other movie files (mpeg1,2,4). they played just as good as
they used to in wmp9.
since i was testing wmv playback by wmp10 on a clean installation of latest
windows xp os i presume there may be two possible causes:
- wmp10 cant play wmv properly on my outdated video hardware. in wmp10
system requirements it says: Video card with 64 MB of RAM (video RAM or VRAM)
and DirectX generation. mine is 8mb +16mb from agp aperture (24mb total -
sssandra) plus dx 6.0 support (trident 3d blade integrated in via kle133). if
this is the case i would like to find out is it still possible to tweak wmp10
into some "compatibility mode" to get it to play wmvs just like wmp9 does.
thru some registry settings or some standalone tweaker, whatever... or i
really have to upgrade hardware in order to be able to use wmp10 for wmvs.
- another cause might be a bug in wmp10.
i really need to figure out what's causing the problem. if any mvps will be
around to read this post i hope perhaps they might be able to consult with
wmp10 developers first to give a finalised answer here. as i understand there
is a significant number of people experinecing the same problem.
p.s. this might be quite important too: i tried to uninstall wmp10 to see
what happens then. wmv playback got improved but NOT COMPLETLY back to the
wmp9 original quality. i suppose some system files were left unrestored by
the uninstaller. so i was thinking wmp developers might also consider a more
thorough rollback routine for wmp10 so that users who need it could get a
100% pure "wmp9 system" after applying it.
