Choppy WMV in WMP 10 playback

Wanted to let somebody know that I'm having a problem here.

I just put together a new system and installed windows media player 10, and
am experiencing a very odd bug, where I can play any given WMV fine, but then
after I have closed media player, and opened a second file, CPU usage goes
through the roof and I get choppy playback.

This doesn't happen with any other kind of file (eg. AVI, MPG, etc.), only
windows media video files. And it doesn't happen with version 6.4 WMP that is
included in the install directory of windows media player.

Once the player is playing back WMV all choppy, I can either reboot to fix
the problem, or reinitialize the display by various means. For instance, when
the playback is choppy, I can ctrl-alt-delete to bring up the "lock
computer/task manager" dialog, and when I cancel this, the video players
fine. Changing resolutions in the windows display settings also remedies the
problem.

I really have no idea what's going on.

My specs are as follows: Windows XP Pro SP2, DX9.0c, Latest video and sound
drivers. Running on an Athlon 64 FX-53, Asus A8V deluxe motherboard, with 1
gig of RAM, and a Geforce fx5200 (which will soon be replaced). I also have
an add-in ATi TV Wonder VE card.

I had much the same set up on my previous system (video card, tv card, same
software and drivers), and experienced no problems whatsoever.

Again this is just with WMP 10 (never got to try 9), and only with WMV files.

I have tried many solutions: Reinstalled video drivers, removed TV card,
turned off DEP in the boot.ini file, reinstalled WMP -- nothing has worked.

Any help would be appreciated.
