Do you get any error or just silence? If system sounds aren't producing any
output, your diagnosis becomes simpler:
* do the speakers work at all? if you can test them with other
devices/computers, do so.
* plug your headphones into the jack in the back of your computer, which
would validate whether or not your sound card is outputting audio...
