No. Right from iRivers website FAQ about your player it says "The iFP
players will only play back MP3 and non-protected WMA files." <-Any file
you download from Napster is a protected WMA file.
It has little to nothing to do with WMP, the device can not play protected
WMA's at all. There is no need to use any software programs (WMA or
otherwise) to try and transfer the files if the player can not decode them.
The "hoops" would be players that support the playback of the files after
you upgrade the firmware on the device. iRiver says nothing about a
firmware update for your model player. It is also not listed on their "DRM
page" which is http://www.iriveramerica.com/drm/. Only the players listed
there can be upgraded to play the files.
If you would like to play these files on a portable device, you must
purchase a new device. There are no "hoops" other than that. :\
If you feel Napster is right about the issue, then you need to contact
iRiver about it as they suggest on their website.
"Please note that if any issues are experienced with these pay-for
downloaded songs, it is very important that iRiver be contacted. The service
providers (music download sites) will not be able to offer any assistance
for your iRiver player when using it in combination with their music. "

Both Napster and iRiver confirm that the device is "capable" of receiving these files... but the device is not necessarily "compatible" as-is. Several areas of the iRiver support site that you and I have both been reading explain that these files are not downloadable UNLESS they "go through" the WMP.
