CPU goes to 100% and stays there after playing file

When I play a large file, the cpu gets pegged and never
returns to "normal" until I re-boot the computer. Ending
Media Player doesn't help, even clearing it via the Task
Manager. It's like it's grabbing resources and not
letting them go... any ideas?
Thanks...
