Hi,

I posted this question on Sun. 05/02 as part of a thread from February 2004,
but didn't get a response. I'm hoping someone will respond this time by
posting it as a separate entry. Please forgive my repost. If anyone can
help with my problem, I'd appreciate it!

Summary:

When I try to play a audio stream from a website in Windows Media Player
9.0, I get the following error:

"Windows Media Player cannot find the specified file. Be sure the path is
typed correctly. If it is, the file does not exist at the specified
location, or the computer where the file is stored is offline."

When I click on More Information I get the following error:

0xC00D1197: Cannot play the file

I searched the newsgroup, but could not find a solution that worked for me.

My problem is described in the following Microsoft Knowlwdgebase link:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;840227

I downloaded the fix file described in the page:

WindowsMedia9-KB840227-ENU.exe

and ran the executable, but it didn't solve my problem. I also changed my
network settings to autodetect, but this didn't solve it either. So I
downloaded and installed the latest version of WMP (9.00.00.3075), no luck.
I was previously running WMP verison 9, but I'm not sure which bugfix number
it was.

Here are my details as requested at:

http://tinyurl.com/2o4h9

>1. What operating system are you using?

Windows XP Pro

>2. What exact version of Windows Media Player are you using? [Only WMP's
Help:About menu will provide this exact information.]

9.00.00.3075

>3. What type of issue are you having? A bug, a feature request, or
something else?

When I try to play a audio stream in Windows Media Player, I get the
following error:

"Windows Media Player cannot find the specified file. Be sure the path is
typed correctly. If it is, the file does not exist at the specified
location, or the computer where the file is stored is offline."

When I click on More Information I get the following error:

0xC00D1197: Cannot play the file

>4. Does this happen in other players? Which ones? [Different players
access the same parts of the system different ways, so a particular bug may
be isolated to a specific interface of a piece of the system, as opposed to
that player.] You will want to try different players in most cases so that
you can help people understand the scope of the problem that you're facing.

I don't get a similar error in other players. For example, I can play
streaming files in Live365 player, the MP3 streaming format at
http://www.bluegrasscountry.org/, Radio@AOL, and the Real Audio stream at
http://www.hober.com/

>5. Does it happen in/with both "mplayer2.exe" and "wmplayer.exe", if
applicable? This is a critical question. "mplayer2.exe" (WMP6) is already on
your system in the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player directory.

I can play the following stream in mplayer2.exe but not wmplayer.exe:

http://www.publicbroadcast.net/wyso/ppr/wyso.asx

>6. Does this happen for files saved locally, files played back from the
Internet, or both?

Only streaming audio files. I can play local .wma and .wav files. I can
also play audio CD's without a problem.

>7. Does this happen only if the file has video, or does it happen for all
files?

I tried to play a sample .avi file from Microsoft's site and got:

0xC00D1197: Cannot play the file

> 8. What type of file are you trying to play? Is it an MPEG, ASF, AVI,
MIDI, WAV, or what?

I'm trying to play an .asx file. I think an .asx file points to an .asf
file, but I'm note sure of the details on how this works.

>9. Does this happen for all files of that type, or just certain ones?
There's a sample page here if you need to see what files you can
successfully still play.

I tried to play a sample .asf file at a microsoft link from page
http://tinyurl.com/2o4h9 and got this error:

0xC00D1198: Cannot connect to the server

>10. What are the steps that you follow in order to produce the error?

Selecting a link from a webpage that casues Windows Media Player to open.

>11. What are you doing when you get the error?

I click on the More Information button and get the following error:

0xC00D1197: Cannot play the file

>12. How could someone else cause the error to happen their computer?

I haven't tried to get someone else to recreate the error. I suppose they
would follow the same steps as I do if they could recreate it.

>13. If the problem occurs with content on the Internet, what URL do you
use to encounter the problem?

http://www.publicbroadcast.net/wyso/ppr/wyso.asx

>14. What video card do you have?

64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 200

>15. What sound card do you have?

Turtle Beach Santa Cruz

>16. Does this same error occur on any other computer?

I don't know

>17. If this is a networking problem, what is your networking
configuration? (And note this addresses most networking issues.)

I changed my settings to autodetect. Not sure how else to answer this
question.

>18. If there's an error code, what is it? What exactly does the error text
say? Most critically, what is the error code number if present?

0xC00D1197: Cannot play the file

>19. What WMP6 version does this page detect?

I get the following page: Windows Media Player is not installed.

>20. What WMP7+ version does this page detect?

I get the following page: Windows Media Player is not installed
