Hi, all.

I've spent the last few days reading a lot of newsgroups (thru google)
trying to find an answer to this (seemingly common) problem and may
have come to a conclusion. No fix. Just a conclusion.
I've been a Netscape user for years and always able to click onto my
radio station (NPR – WWNO – 89.9
http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/wwno/ppr/index.shtml)
and get streaming sound through my Windows Media Player. I've been
able to do this using Netscape 7.1. Then I upgraded to Media Player
series 9 and can no longer connect to that link. What I get is Media
player and an Internet Explorer page that says they cannot find the
link I asked for. I have never used IE. My default browser has always
been Netscape.
After a lot of searching and downloading "fixes" that didn't work, I
downloaded RealPlayer10Gold. Same problem, When I click on WWNO to
start the radio stream I get RealPlayer and a box that says
"RealPlayer needs to play new software to play this clip". I click on
"ok". I then get a screen saying Real is searching for the update. It
searches for a couple seconds then tells me "Unable to connect. Please
ensure you are connected to the internet, or try again later". I'm
obviously already on the internet. That's where I clicked NPR the
streaming audio link.
So…this tells me that both programs are designed to only run with IE.
How annoying and insidiously creepy. Windows Media Player upgrade to
series 9 is apparently programmed to run only in IE. Far as I know
RealRadio is not even a MS product, so why is their software also
designed to run only with IE?
I refuse to sign on to IE as my default browser to test my theory, if
only because that seems to be what MS wants me to do. I'll live
without my radio station 'til somebody (MS) sees the problem and
corrects it.
Sorry for the long rant. Thanks for listening.

Pete
