I've never understood why attempting to help people with no profit or
business motive - just helping out people because maybe helping people is
the right thing to do - brings out bile on the part of some. If helping
people out is "lame", then I'm happy to be called such. =)
I don't disagree that there are options. If you knew anything about me,
you'd know I've jumped on the chances to work with RealNetworks and Apple
and other companies to help them sort out their issues. I *want* them to
succeed because *everybody* raises the bar here, and that means that
everybody puts out better stuff as the years wear on. Remember the
RealPlayer versions 1-5? Think of what level of improvement those had over
time, versus the level of improvement that RealPlayer (and everyone else)
shows version to version lately. It's a competitive field, and you benefit
from it. If Player X bothers you, leave that user ecosystem alone and focus
on your own darling player.
But anyways: it's not about what you or I want - it's about what they, the
people coming in, want. There have been numerous discussions in many forums
(slashdot, neowin, others) about people's antipathy to RealPlayer, just as
others despise Microsoft. It's an interesting situation. The quick thing
to realize is that RealPlayer isn't the solution for many, just as WMP isn't
the solution for many. That's why Media Jukebox, WinAMP, MusicMatch
Jukebox, QuickTime, Media Player Classic BSPlayer, EAC, Roxio, Nero, Sony,
and a thousand other companies exist. Heck, even WMP6 is some people's
preferred "alternative" player. =)
The thing is: people come here looking for a solution to their problem. I
*love* it if they can find work-arounds - I don't ask "does it work in
mplayer2.exe?" idly - but I've come to realize over the years that users are
looking for solutions to THEIR PROBLEM, not your interpretation of their
problem. I'll still tend to move on happily if a user finds a solid
work-around, but... they want help solving their problem. And even if X (be
it WMP6 or RealOne) is an alternative, it's still good to figure out what
went wrong with their system, since many of the issues that bite WMP would
bite other players too.
Anyways: I loathe the system's IMAPI (CD burning) support, I loathe the
"don't expand remote playlists" "feature" of WMP9. Generally, though, I
think WMP9 is a pretty darn fine player. It's pretty inarguably better than
almost any other multimedia player Microsoft has ever put out, and it's at
least more *interesting* than WMP6 (which some people still like better). I
have no intentions of marrying WMP - I don't swing that way - but I do
however have the intention of trying to help users and hopefully gleaning
information along the way that helps me to be a better developer, hopefully
helps me identify and fix or recommend fixes to key user issues, and
hopefully helps me recommend better documentation and processes surrounding
key issues.

them well)
