Trying to play video freezes the comp

Everytime I try to play a videostream from the Internet
the computer freezes.
I have Windows 2000 and WMP9.
When I go to a web site like ESPN which automatically
tries to play a video, my computer freezes. I have to
unplug the computer to be able to restart.
