Playing MPEG2 *.mpg Files

Greetings!

Yesterday, I decided to export a recording from my Creative VideoBlaster
Digital VCR card. It produced about 8 '.mpg' files that would each fit on a
CD-RW. When I initially tried to play the .mpg files, I got an error about
"Class not registered" or something similar. I determined that the
appropriate codec was not installed so I went out looking for one MPEG-2
decoder. I found Elecard MPEG2 decoder and installed it.

The videos were great! It was nice while it lasted. I wanted to burn one
sample .mpg file to a CD-RW and see if I could play it on my DVD player
(Panasonic DVD-S25). Somehow I got around to updating my Adaptec Easy CD
Creator 4 so I could try to burn the file to CD. I knew there was a
CD-burning plugin for WMP 9, and also Real Player, but I wanted to update
anyway. Somehow through the process, I wound up uninstalling the Elecard
MPEG2 codecs. Later on, I reinstalled the Elecard codecs and WMP9 could no
longer play the MPEG2 video clips.

WMP9 now had a different error. Something to do with "Cannot play the file"
with a reference to a Microsoft Help page with rather obscure help. So I
went to support.microsoft.com and looked up the error there under Windows
Media Player. Found
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q234019 which had 5
methods to try successively until the problem was fixed. When I tried Method
2, I discovered I could no longer play ANY .mpg files anymore, not just
these MPEG2 files. So I went on to Method 3 and reinstalled Windows Media
Player 9. I ran setup from the WMP directory. An error came up about "System
Recovery not running" or something, but I just ignored it.

AFTER reinstalling, I could once again play the regular .mpg files, but YADE
(Yet Another Error) came up, and I could only get the video portion to work.
I decided to fix this error first before EVEN trying to play the MPEG2 files
again. The new error was something about "Type 1 codec" or something like
that. A Google search brought up "PCM uncompressed audio" or similar. Well,
I searched and searched and searched on this error, and I kept coming up
with some d00d named zach giving a different answer to the same error EVERY
SINGLE TIME the question was asked by someone else with the same problem.
Needless to say, zach was not very helpful for those reasons.

I decided to start typing up this message, but somewhere in the middle of
it, I tried the MPEG2 video files again just for the fun of it. YES! I got
back to the normal fixable error of "Class not registered". I knew how to
recover from that one. So I saved this message, reinstalled the Elecard
codecs, and walla! I was able to view at least the video portion of my MPEG2
files. Now all that remains is that I have a broken audio codec that
prevents me from hearing the audio portion of almost ALL of the .mpg and
.mpeg files I have on my hard drive, including the MPEG2 files.

So, please help me fix this problem. Here is the text of the error:

"The audio codec identified by the format tag 1 is required to play this
file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the Web,
click Web Help."

And here is what the Web site says:

"The required codec cannot be found

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the required codec
cannot be found. To determine how to obtain the codec identified as 1,
contact the content provider.

Well, I am the content provider as I'm the one that had my DVR software
export these video files. They just so happen to create MPEG2 files. But
this problem exists for regular MPEG files as well. Hence, Creative Labs is
not the one to contact for this problem. That Web page should say, "Contact
Micro$oft Technical Support next year when we might get a clue". Before
yesterday, I was able to view all the video files I had on my hard drive
normally, with high quality audio and video. I seem to recall I had the
"Type 1 codec" error a long time ago, but I somehow fixed it and forgot
about it. I apparently didn't document how.

Can anyone here help me get the audio portion for .mpg files restored to
normal again?

Thanks!
