I am using WMP 10

OK I admit it's an interesting one. The web server seems to be
responding with the correct MIME type, content length and ETag /
content expiration, which is a good start and often a cause of
problems like this.

I've looked at a few scenarions on an XP + WMP11 box.

Firefox browser correctly handed off the mime type to WMP immediately,
and triggered the skin from the direct link to the content (using <a
href="bla" target="_blank">). IE didn't, though I'll qualify that.

I don't have the headspace skin installed, but tried a few others
including Frostbite, compact, Corporate and Revert, none of which are
case sensitive which I'd not tested before.

I tried those links on XP + WMP10 here, using IE 6.0.2900.2180

The headspace skin (green, ugly) fired up immediately, then began to
download the video. So I can confirm this does work, at least for me.

I tried it on the same PC using Firefox 2.0.0.7, but only got the
video playback inside a browser window (think : full window WMP in the
browser, rather like Quicktime plays in Firefox)

It does look like the results are somewhat inconsistent, but I've
definitely had it working in 2 of 4 instances of browser / player / OS
combination. I'll look at XP+WMP11 and Vista+WMP11 tomorrow, using IE7
