Although it's a matter of opinion in a lot of cases, both those
formats are available cross platform, wheras there doesn't seem to be
any WMP player for linux or BSD for example. Mac OS9 support for WMP
seems to have been discontinued at version 7, although OSX support
continues to player version 9. Probably a good thing as it might be
one encouraging factor to move Mac owners to a real OS ;-)

When you talk about streaming (from a web server) what you are
actually getting is a long-term download. This has advantages (most
people have access to some web space) and disadvantages (lack of
fast-start and ability to random-access the file without downloading
to the point you want to play)
>If not, is there any disadvantage in not using Media Server ?
No, no disadvantage at all. The 3 major media servers WMserver, Helix
and Darwin can all broadcast over rtsp, moderate / buffer download
speeds to clients, and offer http streams for clients behind
restrictive firewalls or NAT devices (eg corporate users)
Darwin and Helix will handle 10 streams in the basic (free) version,
after that you'd want to consider how much you want to spend, this
will depend on your intended application and anticipated simultaneous
connections. WMServer has some useful hooks which can be accessed by
IIS. Darwin and Helix can play windows media, real player or quicktime
files and streams, and all 3 can accept incoming encoder streams from
windows media encoder or helxi producer.
