I followed somebody's suggestion here to install Flip4Mac. The error
message went away, but the effect is the same. The video plays, but there is
no audio.

You were quite lucky to connect then - I tried on a PC in WMP7 and it
barfed, then in WMP9 and it couldn't connect to the stream. I don't
think it will really help, but the direct stream URLs are these :
mms://media.exn.ca/exnmedia/exn20050126-solarcar.asf
mms://media.exn.ca/exnmedia/exn20060313-ski.wmv
The first of those uses pretty standard WMA and WMV content. The
second it probably unplayable because though it uses WMV7 video, it
has ACELP audio streams which I don't think Quicktime can read (even
with the Flip Codecs to decode the WMV stream part)
