Or do you mean on the receiving PC ? Or in file playback ?

Thanks so much for the response. Yes on the receiving PC (ie the stream)
and also in the level indicators while encoding. I assume the plug-in
feature is there so you can drop in a graphic or parametric eq or
maximzer/limiter/compressor etc.. BUT they do NADA when in the chain.
Maybe this is a big fat bug but nobody uses them so its not an issue.
I've searched high and dry on the MS site to no avail..

Hmm OK, I've not really had much experience of the plugins side of
WME. The level indicators show the *input* levels to the encoder
rather than the output, though.

With that in mind, it seems putting a compressor filter inline within
the digital domain would be the wrong place to have it (though EQ
should be OK) - because if your content exceeds the sample capabilties
of the ADC in the input component, e.g. sound card, then it'll already
be overdriven

The result of that would probably be digital mush and clipping, which
post processing would be unable to correct. It would also make the
encoder apply too many bits to try to encode the high frequencies in
clipped content, which is detrimental to the broadcast experience as
well.

So I expect the correct approach would be to apply limiting in the
analog domain using a hardware compressor / limiter from the mic /
preamp feed or at the mixing desk.

I'm not a sound engineer, though a guy at work is - have you
considered some sort of low tech pop filter like those fuzzy mic
covers you can buy to limit plosive sound peaks ?

I'm not sure why EQ wouldn't be applied - have you confirmed the EQ in
the media player (and other effects) are all switched off in Now
Playing -> Enhancements ?

You should be (and probably are) testing with a flat EQ curve in the
player to ensure you're hearing the decoded output and not a modified
version of it.
