You've not indicated why this event needs any form of TV capture, so
perhaps your approach is off. Could you instead use a DV camera and
capture from the firewire connection on the PC ?
Ok the event will be broadcast LIVE, the shows producer is doing the show in
HD with 3 cameras, all the switching etc will be done by the shows producer.
They are giving me an Analog Audio and Video output (standard definition)
Ah, because typically I'd suggest using a converter like the ADVC110
http://www.canopus.com/products/ADVC110/index.php which goes from SD
to Firewire without hogging hardware resources on the encoding PC.
I haven't used that box or the Creative you mentioned though, so I
can't make specific recommendations about those devices.
Encoding from HD is near to an order of magnitude more resource
intensive and relatively hard to do in realtime unless you have a
*really* beefy hardware, so it's lucky they've promised an SD feed.
Encoding from SD you ~should~ be able to do realtime on a modern PC,
though the hardware encoding, computer transcoding (to WMV) and server
buffering will all add up to significant broadcast delays which you'll
have to live with - we could be talking about 10-15 seconds lag here.
It dont have to be USB, but I would prefer USB because I can just being a
laptop with me instead of lugging down a desktop PC to Atlanta from
Connecticut. :)
Firewire PC cards are widely available. It's not common for production
equipment to use USB2 for video transfer (and forget USB1, not enough
bandwidth down the wire). USB is usually used for transfer of still
images from DV cameras and that's about it.
The Windows Compatibility list says Creative Labs Audigy is compatable, is
that just the sound card or will this one work? The USB Audigy 2 ZS

It looks like a reasonable deal for the money.
The specs state it will only encode SD (PAL, NTSC, SECAM)

I guess as long as you're getting SD then it should work, though make
sure you have time to test it fully with the real hardware input well
before doing any live encoding (a week or more is good).
You might find minor issues with transcoding MPEG2 video from that
box, it's a bit hit and miss on some systems depending on the
installed decoders. In general, DV-AVI at 25mbps seems to be simpler
and less troublesome to transcode.
