If you create a DVD video (like a typical movie DVD) there are programs that can
transcode that back into a file. DVD video is MPEG2 format which isn't highly
compressed. Windows Media Video (WMV) uses much higher compression, so does
DivX and many other formats (just so you know.) There are programs out there
that can "rip" a DVD to a file, like this one:
http://www.dvd-wmv.com/default.aspx
In the settings of these programs, you can usually specify what bitrate and
video size the output file should be. Reducing either one, especially bitrate,
will result in a smaller file at the cost of reduced quality. Using variable
bitrate (VBR) can help too. You'll need to experiment to see what works best
for your content.

Thanks Mike...I have found some info on google doing some searches...I'm just
not sure what I looking at....one more question...
If I copy them to dvd from my program, then go from the DVD back to
computer, how does it work to re-code them that way? I guess I could check
properties, etc. but still not sure what to do.
I know I sound like I don't know what I'm doing..........that would be
because I don't .

I'm new to this..........(Windows XP if necessary info.
I have a Sony hard drive camcorder which I have downloaded the videos to
Image Mixer(came with camcorder)...I can open them with WMP and Quicktime
and
Nero. They are MPEG files and are huge (1 min video is 81 MB)....Is there
some way I can change them so I can make them small enough to email? I
tried
compressing them, but that only helped like 1 MB.....
I noticed a lot of videos that folks email me are .avi (?) or come up in
properties as windows audio/video files. (These say "movie clip" on the
icon
and the extension is .MPEG.................I'm so lost when trying to
change
file formats.
Help?
Depending on the version of MPEG used, you may not get them compressed any
further without losing significant video quality. Do a search on MPEG2WMV
for a
list of utilities. Or, burn them to DVD (video disc) and then re-encode them
from that.
